my friends buying it for me as a gift so i cant do it through the xbox cause im sure he doesnt want to give me his cridit card number. he wants to do it throught the internet through a site

yes you can
but i think within a year xbox live will become free, because wii online and ps3 online are too

just my thought but yeah, you can get the subscription online and get it relatively fast within the hour

if you have a credit card you can buy it directly from the Xbox and it instally gives it to you... just go to marketplace and subscriptions and you should be able to find your way from there

You can sign up through the xbox.

On the 360 just go to the xbox live blade, and use the "Join Xbox Live Option"
