Xbox Live hangs up at the "Matchmaking" screen. Does...

I'm looking for help for my son. He plays Xbox live and is able to connect with no problem. He can create his own party easily, but when he tries to get in matchmaking (both optimatch and quickmatch) and stays at "searching for best possible game" screen and all of a sudden comes up with a message "cannot connect to Xbox Live".

Any ideas why he can't get past the matchmaking screen? He's cycled through the troubleshooting, and everything checks out. He's been playing for a couple of months, and this has been happening for the last couple of weeks.

Yes, the troubleshooting is the online thing where it checks the connection and comes back and says it's connected. The game worked fine yesterday for a while, then for a short time, he couldn't get on again. I think he's playing Halo 2.

I don't think he's played anything else to know if it happens to other games.It seems like maybe it's the XBox Live SERVER that might be having problems, since it works fine for awhile, and then flakes out. He did get a message that they were updating something (a patch) yesterday, but I don't think it was related.

This has only be happening for the last couple of weeks (I think) and is sporadic apparently. It's strange that he can start his own game, but just get stuck at the matchmaking screen and then disconnects. Has this ever happened to you?

The only thing I could possibly think of is to make sure you've downloaded everything, especially the new maps (they're all free now). Although, it should tell you if you need to download a map.
