XBOX 360 LIVE - cant play online !?

I've got a silver account. I used to play online last time for a few times which was a few months back. But now I can't seem to play online. Everytime i try, it states that i should check family filter or upgrade to xbox live gold. I am using an account that is not below 18 years of age, and the family filter doesn't work for me. I read at several website that i can only play online on weekends. I tried but it is also unsuccessful. Can anyone help me out here? Cheers mate!
