Gears of war online co-op for xbox 360?

ok, i need to know how to join my brother into a online game. so we can play split screen on gears of war online for the xbox 360. i have seen other people online playing this way. For example:
e.x. jakdax and jakdax(1)

I have read online to add my brother as a guest but I receive a error or enter a profile with a valid xbox live membership, whenever I try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
