Do you need Xbox live gold to play EA sports games onlines aganist other players?

I read somewhere that if you have xbox live silver you can play any EA sports game online. Does that also apply to 2k sports games. Because i want to buy NBA 2K8

Yes, to play online against anyone in any game requires a Xbox Live Gold account.
